The EOS Web App is a data-management tool that helps educators and school leaders across public schools in the U.S. visualise and manage student data at both the school and district levels. The aim is to support students towards college and career readiness. It requires districts and schools to be astute with regards to understanding student needs, engage in student outreach, and build capacity in identifying their hidden potential. These objectives were fulfilled by constructing an interface capable of displaying Student Insight Cards (SIC) that deliver a 360° view of student profiles by blending direct student survey feedback with traditional enrolment data, demographics and test scores. Additionally it provides customisable tools to review adults chosen by the students, their quotes and outreach plans, simplified data navigation, and custom filters that drill into insights from key groups or individuals.

The project kicked off in December 2022 and was built by a team of developers, project management and leaders. I served as the Lead Product Designer and Product Strategist - overseeing the end-to-end UX/UI process from the user research to ideation process and the development of a design system.

The EOS Web App is a data-management tool that helps educators and school leaders across public schools in the U.S. visualise and manage student data at both the school and district levels. The motor to this was supporting students towards college and career readiness, which requires districts and schools to be effective at understanding their students, identifying hidden potential and engaging in outreach. This was accomplished by making an interface capable of: Displaying Student insight cards (SIC) that deliver a 360° view of a student by blending direct student survey feedback with traditional enrollment data, demographics and test scores, providing cross-district reports on advanced course enrollment and opportunity, customizable tools to review trusted adults, student quotes & outreach plans, simplified data navigation, and custom filters to drill into insights from key groups or individuals.

the challenge

//

/ / PROBLEM

In fast-moving schools, it’s hard to track each student’s needs — limiting their access to advanced courses.
The existing portal lacked actionable insights, had poor UX, outdated design, and made it harder to support students effectively.

> Challenge 001;

Revamp an existing Portal to deliver greater opportunities for post-secondary success by way of enhancing student access to advanced courses.

> Challenge 002;

To assist and tool-up educators and district leadership teams by helping them identify and enrol greater numbers of students with potential - thus providing an interface that guides them step by step.

> Challenge 003;

The original portal did not provide a clear, user-friendly path with respect to how it was operated; it barely displayed any adequate district-wide data tools needed to understand students, identify gaps or execute outreach plans that increase access to advanced courses.
/ / SOLUTION

a re-designed user-friendly portal that helps educators and leaders uncover student potential and take action — with a modern, clearer UI  that provides: cross-district reports, data custom filters, survey tracking, and tools to support outreach and engagement.

> Answer 001;

Addressing the needs of school and district educators by providing additional mechanisms to assess students’ advanced course potential.

> Answer 002;

Providing users with a clean, modern platform that transforms data into actionable insights through intuitive tools and design.

> Answer 003;

A powerful portal with visualisations through the Student Insight Card (SIC) which give users access to district-wide data. Integrated intuitive filtering, grouping, and sharing tools therefore making the platform easy to explore and act on insights at both the school and district levels.

the previous eos PORTAL was charged with labyrinth-like menus, data tables sprawled without hierarchy, and clicks through heavy workflows.

(Little to no good user experience)

/ / PREVIOUS SYSTEM

Users would have to wade through screen after screen just to identify students in a school or district. It also didn't provide much of an opportunity to connect them with a trusted adult who could help guide them towards their AP success.

ux research

understanding data architecture

We start out by analysing and understanding the old Data Architecture of the system to finally bringing about a better solution that allows flexibility and unlocks data analytics.

Having achieved that, we discovered that the system was high-cost and generated poor results - especially when uploading files. This led us to investigate further the features on the app that users were using the most.

analysing user data

The next step was to collect user data found in the project’s Snowflake folder.

We were able to address various questions including: the type of user who visits and uses the site the most, the most visited pages by these users, and, based on the number of clicks, What are these users' immediate needs?”

In addressing these questions, valuable information such as: who the potential user of the portal is? along with a definitive pattern depicting what users need out of it the most.

user personas

Putting emphasis on User Personas in this project helped us better understand user pain points and needs.

In our previous research we found data that identified how our potential internal and external users respond to their respective categories with each having their own type of users.
DEFINING PERSONAS
EXTERNAL VS INTERNAL ROLES

based on the research, we determined an action plan which focused primarily in solving the users' primary pain points and frustrations.

(External Users vs Internal Users needs.)

/ / USERS' NEEDS

As shown above, we have two groups of users with different needs, but ultimately they share the same path as they are interdependent - Internal Users need to be able to upload .csv files correctly so that External Users can then visualise the Districts, Schools and Student Data (SICs) correctly.

/ / DISPLAYING RESULTS
The new system’s robust data tools such as customisable filters, survey tracking and the Student Insight Card helps educators more effectively glean into student performance, voice, and readiness for advanced coursework. This not only improved student outreach to those who needed support but also brought about a 20% increase in access to rigorous academic opportunities that build pathways to postsecondary success.

With cross-district reports, real-time visual insights and outreach tools, district and school leaders can now confidently identify trends, provide support to trusted adults, establish better student connections, and drive more equitable outcomes. The portal’s usability and impact have also encouraged new partners to engage and thus recognise the value of a system designed to foster access, the sense of belonging and academic success.
